Economical Travel Tips

Travel is expensive and getting more expensive by the day maybe by the hour. But just because travel is getting more expensive, does that mean that we have to stop traveling and just stay at home? I don’t think so. I think that we can take some steps that will make travel a little more economical.

There was a time when we could travel far and wide and not really worry too much about the price of gasoline. Remember gas price wars? Peace has apparently been declared, and the price of gas just keeps going up, up, up with no ceiling in sight.

We could all rush out and buy more gas-economical vehicles, but you can buy a lot of gas (even expensive gas) for the price of a new car. The better option is to learn to drive more economically.

A speed of 55 miles per hour is the most economical speed at which to drive a car. All cars use less gasoline at 55 miles per hour than at faster speeds as well as at slower speeds. Speedy takeoffs and quick stops also cause vehicles to use more gas than slow acceleration, and slowly coming to a stop rather than slamming on the brakes.

Gas prices are not all the same, either. You will pay more for gasoline in more affluent areas of cities and towns, and you’ll pay more for gasoline at stations that front the freeway. The lowest gas prices can be found in middle-class neighborhoods.

Eating where the locals eat is much less expensive than eating at restaurants that cater to the tourist trade; the food is usually better, too. Taking your own snacks and drinks from home can save money as well. Choosing sleep accommodations at hotels and motels that don’t offer a lot of amenities can really cut travel cost and as long as the hotel or motel is safe and clean you’re going to sleep through the experience, anyway.
