Travel - Cruise Ship Vacations

There is something so enticing about a cruise ship vacation! The very idea of visiting exotic ports and traveling on a huge ship with every amenity imaginable can certainly stir the imagination.

Cruises are often billed as “all-inclusive,” but are they REALLY all-inclusive? The short answer is no. The ticket for a cruise covers a room, meals, and a few drinks that is all. It does NOT cover the cost of shore excursions (transportation, guide services, etc.), alcoholic drinks, on-board spas, extra snacks, some special on-board activities, or transportation to and from the port of your departure. So, basically, the cost of the cruise tickets is far from the total cost of a cruise.

So, does this mean that you need to carry a pocket full of cash or a high-limit credit card with you on a cruise? The answer to that one is also, no, and qualified with “not usually.” It depends on the cruise ship line. Most cruise ship lines allow their passengers to just “sign” for the extras and pay for all of them at the end of the cruise.

For some cruise lines, you still need to carry cash for tips and small services, but even this need for cash is rare now. Most cruise lines bill for all extras, including tips.

Most cruise lines stick to a rather rigid schedule. Meals are served only during specific hours and seating is preassigned. At least one cruise line has changed to a more relaxed schedule, so that you are allowed to eat when you want to and sit where you please. Certain activities are, of course, scheduled, but many are available all the time.

There are different cruises to different destinations and for different purposes. Some cruises are meant for families and children are welcome, but some cruises are meant for adults only.
