Luggage Safety

Lost luggage! Every traveler’s nightmare is losing his or her luggage. You fly to the East Coast for important business meetings and your luggage takes the scenic route via California. There are a few things that you can do to prevent this unhappy event from ruining your trip.

1. Assume that your checked luggage will not get to your destination at the same time you do. Pack the essentials in your carry-on bag, including any prescription medicines and certainly any valuables.

2. Bag tags can be easily torn off. Some luggage has a slide-in window about the size of a business card for secondary identification. Next time you purchase luggage, look for this feature.

3. Make certain that the information on this secondary identification is current. Sometimes people buy luggage, insert information into the secondary identification slot, and forget to change it when they change addresses.

4. Put additional identification inside your checked luggage and include your itinerary.

5. Tie a brightly colored ribbon on the handle of your checked luggage to help prevent another traveler from grabbing your bag (that looks just like his bag) off the luggage carousel. Or better yet, put a colored elastic band (made for this purpose) around your suitcase.

6. Tip the skycap generously and be respectful. A generous tip and a respectful attitude can go a long way toward making a skycap extra careful to get your bags checked carefully.

7. When you check your luggage, take the time to make sure the airline tag placed on your luggage correctly identifies the last destination city on your journey. This will prevent your bag from stopping in a city halfway to where you are going. If you don’t know the three-letter ID code for your destination city, ask the skycap or ticket agent.

These tips will not guarantee that your luggage will arrive when you do, but they can help.
