Packing for Travel

Just as travel has gotten easier and faster over the years, so has packing for travel. Inventive and scientific minds and the technology they’ve conjured up have made luggage, fabrics, and personal communication equipment so much better. The objective of these inventive and scientific minds probably wasn’t to make packing for travel easier, but that is certainly one of the happy byproducts of progress.

Space-age materials used in the construction of luggage has made luggage lightweight and yet tough enough to stand up to the most abusive treatment. Fabrics used to make garments have gone through a series of great improvements over the last 40 years. “Perma-press” was an amazing invention that made our grandmothers grin from ear to ear. Weekly “ironing” day was dramatically decreased to merely “pressing” clothing. “Wash and Wear” garments became the norm, and women everywhere rejoiced!

No-iron fabrics have gotten better and better over the years, and that means that packing for travel has gotten easier and easier. Clothing that was once carried in “garment” bags to prevent wrinkling are now packed right along toiletries in luggage.

The new “vacuum” bags allow travelers to pack garments into a plastic bag and use their vacuum cleaners to suck the air right out of the bag, reducing the size to about a quarter of its original size. When the vacuum sealed bag is opened, the clothing inside is still unwrinkled and ready to wear because of the terrific fabric that it is made of.

Many well-versed travelers now can pack an entire week’s worth of clothing into a carry-on bag. Electronic advancements have made computers, cell phones, and other personal electronic equipment so small that business travelers can now get on a plane carrying a briefcase and a single carry-on bag and have everything they need for an extended business trip!
