Travel Abroad Tips

There’s probably nothing more exciting than traveling abroad. Even frequent world travelers feel the excitement, whether they show it or not. But if you really want to insure your foreign travel adventure, there are a few steps that you need to take to insure that your travel abroad will be successful.

Travel Abroad Tip #1: Before you go, register your trip with the State Department. When you travel abroad, you are not under the protection of the U.S. government, but the Department of State can contact you if there’s a family emergency here at home or can assist you if you have a crisis while traveling. The State Department complies with the Privacy Act and will not give out your information or whereabouts without your expressed consent. Go to website: travelregistration.state.gov and register your trip.

Travel Abroad Tip #2: Be certain that you have signed your passport and you visa if you have one and fill out the emergency information page of your passport. It’s amazing how many people fail to take these simple precautions.

Travel Abroad Tip #3: Make certain that you have health insurance that will be in effect wherever you travel. All health policies do not cover you when you are traveling abroad. The simplest thing to do is ask your medical insurance company if your policy applies overseas. Ask if it covers emergency expenses like medical evacuation. If your regular health insurance policy does not cover you when you are on foreign soil, you can purchase travel insurance that will cover you.

Travel Abroad Tip #4: Do your homework! Before you leave home, you need to learn about conditions and laws in the country you are going to visit. When you are in a foreign country, the laws of that country apply to you. You find a lot of very helpful information at the State Department website: travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1765.html.
