Travel - The Price of Gas

The price of gasoline is going up, up, up, and there doesn’t seem to be an end to gasoline price increases in sight. It’s a fact that people are traveling less for pleasure because of the soaring cost of gasoline. (The falling value of the dollar has decreased foreign travel, as well, but that’s another story.)

The question here is, “Is there any way to reduce the fuel costs when we travel”? The answer is yes, there are measures that you can take to help reduce fuel costs when you travel. Let’s start with the car itself:

1. Cars are most fuel efficient when they are driven at about 55 miles per hour. If you drive faster or slower, the fuel efficiency decreases.

2. Jack Rabbit starts and stops decrease fuel efficiency dramatically. Slowly increase speed and slowly decrease speed for the best fuel efficiency.

3. Correct tire inflation will make a car more fuel efficient. Look at your owner’s manual to find the recommended tire pressure.

4. A well-tuned engine is more fuel efficient. Keep your car in tip-top shape.

Some cars are much more fuel efficient than other makes and models. If you like to travel by car, you might consider trading for a car that gets better gas mileage.

Additionally, there are gas cards that can save you money. There are at least two cards that will give you a discount of as much as 6% on gasoline. Usually the discount is in the form of a credit to your credit card bill. If you travel by car a great deal, you would do well to apply for and get one of these credit cards.

Just one more thing all gas stations do not charge the same price for a gallon of the same gasoline. Avoid stations in affluent areas in cities and also avoid stations that front the freeways. You’ll pay less for gasoline in middle-class neighborhoods.
