Disney Cruise Line Port Destination - Eating and Drinking Well at Castaway Cay

Article Source: Disney Cruise Line – http://routebyroad.com

One of the things that you will never have to worry about when you are on a cruise line vacation is where to eat and drink. This is certainly no exception when you arrive at Disneys private island Castaway Cay.

The island has a skeleton staff that travels from one of the surrounding islands nearby. To maintain the island so that it is ready to receive guests. However the bulk of the staff is actually from the cruise line. You will most probably recognise your own servers at one of the eating or drinking establishments around Castaway Cay.

All the food is prepared on the ship very early in the morning and this is then transported to the different locations, where the cooking process is completed. Breakfast is served on the ship and lunch is available on the island from 11.30am until 2.00pm.

Where To Eat on Castaway Cay

There are three main locations where you are able to enjoy a barbecue feast. The two areas that are available for families are called Cookies BBQ and Cookies Too BBQ. Each location is covered with huge canopies in order to provide shade so that you can eat in comfort. The third location is next to Serenity Bay, which is the area that is exclusively for people aged 18 and over. This is next to the adults only Serenity beach.

Eating Well On The Island

One of the most important aspects wherever you go is food. This has all been taken care of for you. As you are on an island, the food that will be on offer to you is everything that you would expect to find at a barbecue. The array of choice will include hot and sticky barbecue ribs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and barbecue chicken. As well as all that good stuff, there is also a well stocked salad bar with a good choice of salad dressings.

If you still have room for dessert, you will find that there is cake and cookies on offer as well as fresh fruit. You will be able to get sliced fruit such as pineapple, cantaloupe, melon and grapes.

Drinking Well On The Island

At each of the food locations, you will find a beverage counter. Here you can help yourself to an array of soft drinks including Sprite, Coke, Fanta and water. There are also several bars on the island where you can get the alcoholic beverage of your choice including the signature cocktail of the day.

After a morning of water activities or simply laying out in the sun, the fantastic barbecue that is provided by the Disney crew will certainly satisfy all taste buds and appetites.

Disney Cruise Line Destination Port - Welcome To Castaway Cay

Article Source: Disney Cruise Line – http://routebyroad.com

If you have chosen a Disney Cruise Line adventure with a Caribbean itinerary then one of the islands that you are bound to visit is called Castaway Cay. This is an island that is privately owned by the Disney Corporation and is exclusively available to those on a Disney ship.

Everything You Need Is In Your Daily Schedule

Every day of your cruise you are provided with a daily schedule of events. This is exactly what you will receive when you arrive at Castaway Cay. On one side of this information pack you will see a colourful diagram of the island. All of the attractions and things of interest have been colour coded and highlighted for your convenience. You are able to discover where the family beaches are, where the adult only beach is, where the different water activities are located and where the different food and drink outlets are.

On the other side of the daily schedule you will find that many things have been timetabled for you so that you can pick and choose what you want to do and see. This is great because you will not miss out on all the fantastic possibilities open to you. There is something for all ages and you can be kept busy all day long if you so wish.

Meet The Disney Character On The Island

On the Castaway Cay schedule you will see that all the character appearances have been highlighted for you. This is a great opportunity for you and your family to get some great photos of the Disney characters wearing their beach attire.

As we are on an island you are sure to spot Captain Jack Sparrow, the star of the film Pirates of the Caribbean. This is, of course, his natural habitat so do not be surprised if you find him walking over the sand dunes towards you.

Getting Around The Island

There are two ways to get around the island. You can choose to walk along the well defined pathways that lead to the beach areas, the BBQ areas and all the water activities. Alternatively you can hop onto the trams that travel around the island at very regular intervals. The first tram is about 2 minutes away from the ship and will stop at two locations, Scuttles Cove and Pelican Point. The second tram will take you to Serenity Bay, the adult only beach.

Once the ship arrives at Castaway Cay, you will be able to spend a full day onshore. Everyone has to be back onboard by 5.00pm when it is time to set sail and continue with your Disney Cruise Line vacation.

Disney Cruise Line Destination Port - Shopping At Castaway Cay

As part of the Caribbean cruise itinerary for a Disney Cruise Line vacation you are sure to visit Disneys private island called Castaway Cay. There will be plenty of scheduled events for you and your family to take part in and you will also be able to do a little bit of shopping while you are there too.

Shopping on The Island

If you are looking for something special then you are sure to find plenty to your liking at one of the stores on the island. This is the only place that you will be able to purchase items that have the Castaway Cay name or logo on them. If you see anything that you like, you need to purchase it as soon as you see it as these things are not available anywhere else, including on the Disney ship.

There are two main stores that you can visit; one is called She Sells and Everything Else. The other store is called Buy the Seashore. Items for sale include exclusive Disney Castaway T-Shirts, hats, towels, dresses, magnets and lots more.

Everything Can Be Delivered To Your Stateroom

You do not have to worry about carrying all of your new purchases around with you. You can actually have everything delivered to your guestroom for you. Simply speak to one of the helpful sales assistants who will be able to sort this out for you.

All you need is your Key To The World Card that was given to you on the first day of your vacation. Everything you purchase will be automatically added to your account, which you will be able to settle up on the final evening of your cruise.

Sending Postcards From Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay has its own little post office. This is the only place where you will be able to get the exclusive Castaway Cay postmark stamp. The post office is open from 9.30am until 4.00pm. This is the only place on the island that you will need to use cash for.

In order to post your letters from here, you need to purchase Bahamian stamps as US stamps are not accepted. This is because Castaway Cay is part of the Bahamas. You can use US currency in order to make your purchase.

One thing that you should be aware of is that postal deliveries are a little bit slower than you would expect. A postcard to the United States will take about 5-7 days to arrive and a postcard sent to Europe will take up to 6 weeks to arrive.

Cruise Ship Destination Port - Things of Historical Interest in Nassau

Article Source: Disney Cruise Line – http://routebyroad.com

Things To See In Nassau

One of the ports that many cruise ships have as part of their itinerary is the Bahamian town of Nassau. It is a small place but there is plenty to see here. If you choose to get off your cruise ship and want to take a walk around the area, you will discover that there are some great historical monuments to see. Here are just a few of the sites that you will see that are within walking distance from the harbour.

The first thing you will want to do is to pick up a free map from the Port Authority Building. This is the building that everyone has to walk through that opens out into Nassau. All the points of interest are highlighted on these maps for your convenience.

Things of Historical Interest in Nassau

Queens Staircase

If you follow the map and walk along Elizabeth Avenue you will find yourself at one of the main sites of historical interest in Nassau. This is called the Queens Staircase. This is a set of stairs that were cut into the limestone hill by slaves. Sixty six stairs were created which lead up to Fort Fincastle, the fort that was used to protect the island from foreign invasion. Sixty five of the steps now remain. They are very narrow and very steep but you are sure to feel a sense of achievement once you have climbed up them all.

Fort Fincastle

Fort Fincastle is a ship shaped structure that was completed in 1793. It was constructed by Governor Lord Dunmore and overlooks Nassau, Paradise Island and the eastern approaches to the island of New Providence. The design of the Fort was created so that potential enemies would think that it was a large ship from a distance which would hopefully deter them from attacking the island. There are several cannons that have survived over the centuries including two 12 pounder cannons and one Howitzer.

Fort Fincastle used to serve as a lighthouse until 1817, when a new lighthouse was built on Paradise Island. You can take a short guided tour which lasts about 15 minutes and costs only $1. Once you are inside you will see the fantastic views of the town. On a lovely clear day, you will be able to spot your cruise ship in the distance and produce some wonderful landscape photographs.

Water Tower

Opposite Fort Fincastle you will see the Water Tower. It is 126 feet tall and is known as the highest point in Nassau. This is also a great place to see spectacular views of the whole city. It was built in 1928 as a water supply reservoir for the surrounding area.

Once you have spent a little bit of time taking in these historical buildings, you can choose to return to the Queens Staircase and head back down the stairs. This also provides a great photo opportunity. You can then take a look at the wonderful crafts that have been hand made by the sellers in the area. You can pick up artwork, bags and hats that have been hand woven and even statues hand crafted from wood.

Caribbean Cruise Ship Destination Port - A Super Tour of Downtown Nassau

Article Source: Disney Cruise Line – http://routebyroad.com

If you have booked a Caribbean cruise, one of the destinations that you may be lucky enough to visit is the city of Nassau on the island of New Providence. It is part of the Bahamas and is a beautiful place that has lots to offer if you are planning to go onshore for the few hours that you will be there.

Here are just a few of the highlights that you will be able to see if you decide that you would like to take a leisurely wander around. You can take an independent walking tour where you will be able to see the main attractions of Nassau within the space of an hour. It will likely be very hot so before you set off, make you take a bottle of water with you and apply a good amount of suntan lotion.

Things To See In Downtown Nassau

Once you pass through the Port Authority Building, where everyone who is entering the country has to walk through, you will find that many tour operators will be trying to get your attention in order to entice you with one of their day trips and excursions.

If you just want to take a walk around the town, then simply pick up a complimentary city map which you will find on one of the many counters or on the wall display area. Open up the map and you will find a diagram with the heading Downtown Nassau.

Everything that is of interest has been highlighted on the map. And you do not need to worry because it is all within walking distance. You may be walking slower due to the heat but it is all still within reach.

Rawson Square

One of the first things that you will see as you take your leisurely walk is Rawson Square. Here you will discover a bust of Sir Milo Butler. He was the first Bahamian born Governor General from 1973 1979. The Bahamas was a British colony until its independence in 1973. The bust is made out of bronze and was unveiled in 1986.

Parliament Square

Just opposite Rawson Square is Parliament Square. This area contains the House of Assembly, the Senate and the Supreme Court, all of which were all constructed during the early 1800s and are painted in a striking pastel pink. There is a small statue of Queen Victoria that sits in front of the whole square. It is made out of marble and shows the Queen wearing robes of state and holding an orb and sceptre in each hand.

These are just a few of the sites that you will see as you walk around Nassau. There is plenty more to discover and you will also have plenty of time to shop for hand made crafts and gifts to remind you of your visit to the Island.

Ferrara an Alternative Destination for Your Italian Journey

TOP TRAVEL DESTINATIONS – http://routebyroad.com

The usual trip to Italy proposes the celebrated cities of Venice, Florence or Rome. You will be often lodged in an international hotel, usually very expensive, and you will probably get an aseptic reception and a low quality price ratio. You will be quite lost in a large city area with a heavy traffic and you will share your visits to monuments and museums with mass tourism.

Sometimes it happens that small is better. You can plan instead to visit Ferrara, a small medieval and renaissance city of Emilia Romagna, in the north of Italy. It has been recently declared a Unesco world heritage site, because of its magnificently conserved ancient urbanistic structure, superb monuments and artistic treasures and the rich and varied surrounding territory. In Ferrara and its countryside you can plan your stay in a little hotel, a guesthouse, a bed & breakfast or a farmhouse where you will find a quite cheap accommodation and a warm welcome.

In Italy there is plenty of magnificent old cities, but Ferrara is something different. It hasn’t been involved in the frantic transformation and modernization that caused a lot of Italian cities to loose their identity and soul. Ferrara is, in some way, a world apart. The ancient city wall, that had in the past the purpose to defend the city from hostile military attacks, is still preserved. It prevented Ferrara to grow out of control, and also preserved the urbanistic tissue of the city. The ancient narrow alleys had been conserved and the bicycle is still the most utilized vehicle in the city. In fact Ferrara is internationally renowned as the bicycle’s city. In the 15th century Ferrara reached its maximum development, under the power of the Este family. The Maecenatism of the Dukes of Este was a very effective attractant for a lot of artists, in particular architects like Biagio Rossetti, Girolamo da Carpi, Giovanni Battista Aleotti, painters like Piero della Francesca, Francesco del Cossa, Dosso Dossi, Cosme Tura, and literates like Torquato Tasso. This offered the stimulus for the accumulation of so many artistic treasures in Ferrara and the development and renaissance transformation of the city. The Cathedral, masterpiece of Nicol, the magnificent and perfectly preserved powerful Ferrara castle, the world famous the Palazzo dei Diamanti, masterpiece of Biagio Rossetti, with its over eight thousand diamond shaped ashlars, and the superb fresco cycle of the Months in Schifanoia Palace, masterpiece of the Officina Ferrarese, a very rare renaissance cycle of paintings of profane subject, are only the main attractions of Ferrara.

Moreover, the surrounding territory is extremely rich of artistic and naturalistic points of interest, first of all the Delizie Estensi, ancient country residences of the Este family. The main of these, the Belriguardo Castle, was a little Italian Versailles where the court spent the summer time, and was celebrated by Goethe in his Italian journey.

The near Delta of the Po River is a precious naturalistic area, protected under the natural reserve of the Delta del Po Park, and is one of the best spots in Italy and in Europe for birdwatching with more than 300 different species of birds registered.

The last but not the least reason to visit Ferrara is its high quality gastronomy, with first of all the ancient Ferrara bread, the renaissance ciupta, still prepared with the old recipe and protected as an European mark IGP, with its unique and strange shape that recall in the same time the male and the female symbols, and the Salama da sugo.

Fano a Dream of a Holiday Destination

TOP TRAVEL DESTINATIONS – http://routebyroad.com

You stand on the beach on Fano Island with your back to the sand-dunes looking out towards the North Sea and you wonder if what youre seeing is real. The beach is so wide you cannot guess how far it is to the sea. You can see little black figures on the shoreline; sometimes they resemble the figure eight and sometimes they break in half, just for a fleeting moment, so that you see two ovals, one above the other. Everything about this island is dream-like and when you leave you wonder to yourself if you were really ever there.

But real this island is. Fano (pronounced fay-nooh) is the northern most of the North Sea islands that span from Holland in the south, to Denmark in the north. It is small, only about 8 km wide and 20 km in length and lies 3 km off the Danish city of Esbjerg, onetime 3rd largest fishing port in Europe and, undeniably, Denmarks ugliest city, though a good deal better than many other cities to be found in Europe.

The only way to reach Fano is by a small car and passenger ferry that departs from Esbjerg every 20 minutes. There has been talk of building a bridge to the island, but it is to be hoped that this will never happen. After a 15 minute crossing you arrive at the main town of Nordby (pronounced nor-booh). It is called a town but it is really only a village. The island has two settlements Nordby and Sonderho (pronounced sunner-hooh) and both are exquisite.

When departing the ferry, spend some time walking the length of the main street. The street has barely changed in over 200 hundred years. Both sides are hemmed in by single storey thatched cottages – the ridge of the thatched cottages is finished with sods of grassy-earth, unlike England where the ridge is also made of thatch. And the road narrows in places so that a car can only just squeeze through. The street contains many little shops, selling everything from flowers, knit wear and crafts. There is an ancient potter (complete with a shaggy beard) who makes and paints beautifully simple pots, vases, plates and cups. You can also pop-in to the amber shop. If you talk to the owner, he will tell you how he collects the amber off the beach after the spring storms and polishes and grades the amber. He will even show you his more unusual pieces that contain insects that lived and died millions of years ago.

You can travel south to the islands other settlement, Sonderho. Both villages are on the east side of the island, gaining protection from the North Sea on its westward side. Sonderho, especially, seems to hunker down in the sand dunes. The visitor will leave Nordby knowing that the town is truly exquisite, he will arrive in Sonderho and know he has found something sublime.

Sonderho, is beautifully positioned on the south of the island amongst the sand dunes and reed beds. There are few shops but there is the Sonderho Kro (inn). It was founded in the early 18th century and has been in the same family for nine generations. The visitor really should dine there. The cuisine is superb and the inn is one of the most romantic spots on earth. You should try the smoked fish and meats, and afterwards walk in the small garden of the inn and inspect the smoke-houses. There is also a windmill on the outskirts of the village and a church, and both are well worth seeing.

The islands crowning glory is its beach. It runs the entire length of the island and is very, very wide. There are acres of room, even at the height of summer. You can be far away from everyone else despite the cars and camper vans that drive up and down it; the island bus that connects Sonderho to Nordby; the kite buggies and kite boarders that throng to the island; dog walkers; and the few nude tourists youll often see strolling along the beach! There is an annual kite festival held every year on the beach, in May, and thousands of kites are flown; its a fantastic site.

The island has, what seems like, hundreds of summer-houses. Most are holiday homes for Danish families. If youre going to spend some time on the island, you should consider renting one and spend time amongst the dunes or in the woods, sitting on the porch, sipping wine in the a amber-glow of the long, Nordic summer evenings. The intoxicating, dream-like quality of the island will take hold of you and wash your weariness away; its a promise.

And when you come away, youll have dream-like memories of the shimmering images you saw on the beach and doubt if you were really there. Maybe the island is just a dream, maybe it isnt. Perhaps, the island is the Lorna Doon of the North Sea. A place, a lucky few, has had the good fortune to visit.

Colorado Springs a Truly Wonderful Travel Destination

TOP TRAVEL DESTINATIONS – http://routebyroad.com

Well I decided to write about the great state of Colorado and how much fun vacationing is there. But there are so many great places to go in Colorado it was tough to narrow down one area to visit. But eventually I decided on the Colorado Springs area.

Colorado Springs and it’s surrounding area has so much to offer and of course the beauty of the mountains makes you want to visit again and again. There is something about just being in the mountains that is relaxing and peaceful. I have spent many vacations in Colorado and never get tired of the beauty of the mountains, I even had the opportunity to live there for a short period of time and never grew tired of the scenery. Each time I go to the Rockies there is always something new to see or do it seems like.

I have been to Colorado Springs many times and for any of you readers that may be interested in going there I thought I would tell you a little about what the area has to offer.

There is of course Royal Gorge, the views down are breathtaking and awe inspiring. You can walk or drive across the bridge, take a tram down to the river, and even tour the area by rail. A definite must see if you are in the area.

After you have looked down you will want to experience Pikes Peak Highway, it is truly one of the most beautiful areas of the Rockies. You may see dear, marmots, elk, big horn sheep, and of course there is always the chipmunks. Be sure to take items to snack on and maybe a picnic lunch because you are sure to stay longer than you thought. Have some quarters available for when you get to the top for their binoculars or better yet bring your own to use and enjoy all through your trip. You can even take the cog railway to the top if you prefer that over the drive.

If you are into or want to experience some rafting Echo Canyon is the place to go. If you are into the milder family version they have that available and for the thrill seekers raft the Royal Gorge.

Manitou Springs is noted for their carbonated mineral drinking springs. You will also find wonderful shopping in many specialty shops and boutiques. A wonderful place to go for window shoppers and serious shoppers alike. For you chocolate lovers the fudge is out of this world.

If you enjoy waterfalls then Seven Falls should be on your itinerary. You can climb quite high to see the falls, or take the mountain elevator if that is more to your tastes. You may even be able to feed peanuts to the chipmunks which is a lot of fun for old and young alike. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to really enjoy the area and you may want to consider staying there through sunset and enjoying all the colorful lights. The falls are gorgeous will the lights in the evening.

You can’t forget the North Pole and Santa’s Workshop if you have young ones. You will find Santa, a petting zoo, amusement rides, magic shows, and a ton of fun things there. I have been there many times and it is still a magical place that is fun for the whole family.

There is also the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo which is awesome. Be sure and bring your walking shoes as the zoo is located in the mountains so there will be some hills to climb, but the walking will be worth it.

Other places you may want to visit would be the Manitou Cliff Dwellings, if you go in the summer you may be able to watch some Pueblo Indian dances live. For some family fun be sure and visit Buckskin Joe Frontier Town and Railway. You can ride a train and see some spectacular scenery and enjoy all the wild west action that it has to offer.

There is of course the Garden of the Gods, where you can find wonderful art exhibits representing the culture and history of the area. And of course there is Cave of the Winds. There are many different tours available and all are worth the time. If you time it right when you go you will be able to see a wonderful laxer show in the evening as well. It is quite dramatic and worth staying up for.

Well these are just a few of my favorite places to go in the Colorado Springs area, I am sure I have forgotten some but this will give you a start on what you want to do and see when you get there.

Botswana Emerges as an up Market Safari Destination

TOP TRAVEL DESTINATIONS – http://routebyroad.com

Botswana is a country of seemingly endless open spaces. Though it occupies an area the size of France, the human population is only 1.6 million. This is one country where wildlife does not face stiff competition for land resources from man. As a result the animals have multiplied with a flourish. Botswana can justifiably claim to host some of the finest game sanctuaries in Africa. The worlds’ largest exporter of diamonds by value, the country is not under pressure to get in more tourists. And the government has adopted a deliberate policy of keeping visitor numbers low. The hidden hand of the market has responded by adjusting the price to reflect this reality. Botswana has therefore emerged as an exclusive up market safari destination.

Bill Clinton, together with his wife went on safari in Botswana in 1998. The power couple was greatly fascinated by the wildlife, and the serious games of life and death they play. Affirming his position on top of the food chain, the president ate for dinner some of the animal species he had watched earlier. His evening buffet included zebra, crocodile, impala in monkey sauce, and giraffe. “I tried it all”, he declared with satisfaction. But the former American president is only one in a long line of heavy hitters to enjoy the wildlife havens of Botswana. Hollywood legends, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor chose to remarry here, for example.

Botswana is dominated by the Kalahari Desert. It occupies 84% of the land area, mostly in the west, central and north of the country. But the Kalahari is not a desert in the Sahara sense. You find the occasional sand dune, but also substantial vegetation in the form of short thorn and scrub bush, trees and grasslands. Very little water though, and hence the desert tag. To the northwest, you find Okavango, the world’s largest inland delta. The northeast is a land of gently rolling tablelands interrupted by granite hills and rock formations. The east and southeast, where 80% of the people live has more varied relief. And the rain clouds linger more and unburden themselves more freely, relative to the rest of the country.

Today Botswana is a peaceful, well-managed and relatively prosperous country. The country wealth per man indicator places among middle-income nations alongside Mexico and Russia and ahead of Brazil. But it has not always been so and the country has come along way. The San people (otherwise known bushmen) are believed to be the original inhabitants of Botswana. Their descendants survive to this day, some living as their forefathers did for most of the 30,000 years historians guess they have been around. Later -much later, Bantu groups, prominent of which were the Tswana, became the masters of these realms.

The modern Botswana nation has been shaped by the alliances made in response to historical currents swirling in southern Africa in the eighteenth century. The rulers at the time aligned their interests with those of the British against the Boers who were approaching from the south and the Germans from the west. For the British, the value of the alliance was strategic and not much was expected in terms of economic advantage. And that is how the relationship resulted in the Bechuanaland Protectorate – the precursor of modern Botswana. The British remained in charge until independence in 1966.

The visitor to Botswana is drawn by the credible intelligence that abounds about the quality of its pristine wildlife sanctuaries. Chobe National Park, one of the finest game parks in Africa is located to the north east of the country. The park has the greatest variety of game anywhere in the country. That is why the busy Bill Clinton found himself at Chobe for his short safari. Wildlife thrives among the swamps and grasslands that stretch along the flood plains of the Chobe River. Occupying 10,560 square kilometers, it is particularly renowned for the great concentration and sheer abundance of its elephants, estimated to number 80,000.

The Chobe elephants are migratory and move along the Chobe River, their reliable redoubt in the dry season. African elephants are the largest among elephant species -and those at Chobe are the largest of them all. The population has gradually built up since the 1930’s when wildlife in the area began to enjoy some sort of protection. The infamous trade in ivory, particularly in the 1970’s and 80’s encouraged the decimation of elephant populations in other parts of Africa. But the elephants of Chobe – thank God – were spared contact with the dirty hands of poachers. Other animals to see here include some of the usual suspects on an African safari – lion, cheetah, hippo buffalo, giraffe, antelope, jackal, warthog, hyena, crocodile, zebra. The birdlife is also diverse. Cruising or driving along the Chobe River, you get the best view of the animals.

The Savuti Marshes of Chobe are reputed to have the largest predator population density in southern Africa. The marshes have the textbook features that draw predators. In a flat and hostile environment, they provide a place where wildebeest, buffalo, zebra and many species of antelope congregate for a drink. The predators – cheetahs, leopards, lions, wild dogs, hyenas, wild dogs, and jackals – naturally follow. Some predators such as lion tend to be rather lazy and the setting here is a gift. The usual entry point for Chobe is Kasane, which is located about 800km north of Gaborone. You get here by flying from Gaborone, Maun or Victoria Falls in neighbouring Zimbabwe. Camps and lodges can be found throughout the park.

The Okavango Delta, in the north west of Botswana is the largest inland delta in the world. Spreading over 15,000 square kilometers, it is formed as the flow of the Okavango River slows down and soaks into the sands. That is why it is referred to as ‘the river which never finds the sea’. The network of channels, ox bow lakes, lagoons, swamps and islands that arise is very pleasing to the eye. But that is not all of Okavangos’ bounty. The delta is filled with wildlife – wildebeest, giraffe, hippo, elephant, zebra and buffalo have all found a home here. The birds too are plenty, more than 550 types, some of which live on the trees and others on the water.

The best place to see wildlife in Okavango is within the spectacular Moremi Wildlife Reserve. The reserve lies in the centre of the delta and occupies 3,000 square kilometres. In Moremi you view game aboard a vehicle or by gliding on a makoro (dugout canoe) or other type of canoe. Accommodation is available in camps and lodges within the delta area. In Moremi itself, you can stay in tented campsites but no permanent camps or lodges are allowed.

If you are interested culture, take a break at Chief’s Island, the largest in the delta, and see ancient rock paintings. The painting were presumably executed by the artistically inclined fore bearers on the San people. The Okavango Delta should be avoided in summer, especially December to March, when most of the camps are closed down. At that time, it is very hot and humid- temperatures rise above 38C, and thunderstorms unleash daily. You enter Okavango through Maun – the deltas’ principal town, by flying or taking a bus from Gaborone, 600 km away.

Visitors to either Chobe or Okavango may wish to add on a visit to Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls is actually in Zimbabwe but is easily accessible from the northern part of Botswana. Victoria Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world and one of Africa’s prime attractions. Situated on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, the falls occur where the steadily flowing Zambezi River, unwarned, casually approaches and then suddenly plunges down a series of basalt gorges in a breathtaking display of several waterfalls. Mist and thunder emanating from the falls can be witnessed from far off.

The spray from the falls sustains the rain forest on the opposite wall of basalt and creates an almost constant rainbow visible even by the light of the moon. The falls are best seen from the air, thus activities such as helicopter flights, balloon rides and micro-lighting over the falls are a must do. Other exciting activities available are bungee jumping off the bridge – which also gives a spectacular view down the gorge, canoeing, white water rafting, river safaris, elephant back safaris and many more. Be sure to review our offers for a Botswana safari and Victoria Falls tour.

Adventure seekers, who travel not merely to convenient places, may wish to check out the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. The shallow saltpans cover about 6,500 square kilometres and rank among the largest in the world. The atmosphere here is admittedly surreal, with shimmering mirages in a vast open terrain broken only by a few baobab trees. Bird watchers in particular will be intrigued at the unusual environment as they watch numerous flamingos and pelicans. The pans occupy the area between Francistown (410 km north east of Gaborone) and the Okavango Delta. There is plenty of wildlife, in the Makgadikgadi National Park, but not as much as Chobe- so this will not be your only reason for coming here.

Botswana is the site of a unique wildlife conservation initiative in Southern Africa- the concept of cross border parks. The initiative is anchored on the common sense observation that wildlife does not recognise international borders. Successful conservation efforts in an area bordering another country can be reduced to naught if the neighbouring countries do not collaborate. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a combination of two parks -the former Gemsbok National Park in Botswana and Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa.

Covering over 36,000 sq km, Kgalagadi is one of the biggest wildlife conservation areas anywhere in the world. Botswana contributes about 75% of the park in the southern Kalahari Desert. The park is a unique conservation area for it allows the large-scale wildlife migratory movements that were once common in the savanna grasslands of Africa, but are sadly not possible any more. The appeal of the harsh beauty of the Kalahari aside, scientists are extremely curious to find out the secret story of the flora and fauna that has adapted to what appears to be a very difficult environment.

For ordinary folks, the park is host to the famous black-maned Kalahari lions. You will also see gemsbok, springbok, eland, blue wildebeest, cheetahs, wild dogs, jackals, bat-eared foxes and leopards. Birding is also excellent and of 297 species recorded, 96 are resident. It is difficult to get to Kgalagadi. From Gaborone, you drive for 860 km, of which 550 km is tarred and the rest gravel. Being a cross border park, you can also access it through South Africa. The park has no permanent tented campsites and on safari you must bring in everything you need.

The dry season, especially between April and October, is the best time to visit Botswana on safari. It is then easy to spot wildlife gathered near water sources. The rains come over the southern summer months of November to March. The roads are then difficult to use and with the abundance of water and pasture, the animals tend to scatter. Early morning and night temperatures in winter (May to August) can drop below freezing, especially in the southwest. But the days are then cool to warm. The summer experiences high daytime temperatures of up to 38C. The cloud cover, though, and the rains tend to cool things a little bit. Beware that August is very dry and dust and sand storms tends to rise from the west.

Remember to pack a pair of binoculars- they bring the animals closer without the usual risks. A pair of decent sunglasses is a good idea, especially if you travel to the Kalahari, where the glare can be somewhat unsettling. Also pack photographic and video equipment to record your safari for the sake of those of your unlucky friends who may not have been to Botswana. On safari, you are advised not to wear white or bright clothing to avoid exciting the animals. Light cottons and linens are adequate for summer. To survive winter mornings and evenings, you need warmer wraps and sweaters. Women should avoid wearing scanty beachwear in rural areas away from hotels and campsites to avoid offending locals.

Medical Tourism in Asia growing in popularity. It is high quality and affordable. Just one of International standard hospitals in Bangkok serves 400,000 international patients annually, In the USA cataract surgery for one eye runs around $8,000. There’s more to Singapore than urban glitz, like rambling in the rain forest of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.

Japan – Tokyo is the capital city and home of the Imperial Residence and Emperor’s Palace. Select a popular destination or region in Japan and explore its attractions. Ride the Bullet Train to the magnificent city of Kyoto. Visit Hiroshima and the Peace Memorial Park. Castles, temples, gardens, the list of top destinations in Japan is too long for this article..

If you’re in Hong Kong with the little ones, they’ll probably appreciate Ocean Park (aquarium), Water World (swimming pools and water slides), and of course Disneyland. If you’re in Hong Kong for more than a few days, then there’s plenty of outlying islands to discover.

It is often said that for the traveler that has seen it all and done it all, there is still Katmandu, Nepal. And, that too is in Asia!

Alaska a Grand Destination

TOP TRAVEL DESTINATIONS – http://routebyroad.com

Most Americans would love to see Alaska, but have never gotten the chance to do so. There are many scenic pictures that can help to captivate the feeling that one might have when rolling across the crisp white snow with a dog-drawn sled. For the most part, it is not hard to find a picture or two of the pristine valleys and rivers, but to really see the land and wildlife up close and personal is a whole different story!

If and when you get the chance to step foot on the beautiful land that is known as Alaska, there are a few places that you will not want to miss on your journey. Listed below are a few of the most popular destinations while visiting Alaska.

If you ever get the chance to take a cruise to Alaska, it is absolutely recommended! There are many beautiful coastal cities that you can view on your way around Alaska, including: Skagway, Juneau and Fairbanks. When you get a look at the view from the deck of a ship, it is a scene that you will likely never forget.

The forests of Alaska can be just as memorable as the well known wildlife that calls it home. There are many glaciers and icebergs found in Alaska. For many visitors, it can be a very peaceful and surreal experience to visit Alaska. According to scientists, the glaciers of Alaska (with the exception of one) are shrinking in size, so if you want to see them for yourself, time is of the essence. They may seem huge right now, but in many years, they may well be a part of the water that surrounds Alaska.

If you are like most travelers, then one of the first things you may think of when someone mentions Alaska are the incredible mountains. Though there are many photographs of these mountains floating around, there is nothing like the incredible view in person!

Aside from the scenic points of view in Alaska, certain history is also of important note. If you were inclined, you may want to stop by a saloon or other historical attraction that were known as the building blocks of Alaskas early settlement. Alaska was a key factor in the gold rush, too, so that is also an important part of its history to learn a little more about.

While sightseeing is a big part of the vacation process, it is also equally important to be properly prepared for your trip to Alaska. It is especially imperative that you are aware of the current weather conditions when you are packing and traveling. In a moments notice, it can become quite wet and cold in Alaska, so it is recommended that you keep a jacket near at all times.

In Alaska, there are times of the year that never end; sometimes, the sun doesnt set for weeks at a time! These times of the year really help with the development of Alaskas fruits and vegetables. Alaska is acknowledged as having beautiful crops of lettuce and strawberries.

When you are trying to think of a destination for your next family vacation, remember Alaska! There are a ton of activities and things to see in Alaska, so boredom should never have the chance to set in. If you are making a list of things to do while you are in Alaska, try including these things:

Snowmobiling

Mountain Biking

Hunting

Kayaking

Humpback Whale Watching

Fishing

Helicopter/Plane Tour

Attend Current Festivals

Catch the Moonrise/Moonset

When you are on your vacation in the beautiful land of Alaska, make sure you take plenty of pictures! Be sure to pack enough film and/or memory cards and travel accessories for your camera so that you dont miss a second of your trip.

Now that we have observed everything that makes Alaska so special, I think I am ready to book a cruise. What about you?
